The Adelong

William Edwards and his sister Jane, taking tea in the garden of The Adelong.

· William Pack Edwards left Ashwell for the goldfields of Adelong, Australia in 1865 and after only a few years returned a wealthy man, to build this substantial house for himself and his sister.

· The keystone above the door shows a carved Emu and Kangaroo, alongside native Australian grasses and the date 1881.

· While building the home for himself and his sister Jane he fell into dispute with the baker next door.  This led to The Adelong being built so close to the Eastern boundary that the baker was unable to use the lane to the right of the bakery for deliveries at the front; forcing the use of Back Street for the main entrance to the bakery.

· A white cockatoo took pride of place in the window for fifty years, along with a glass case of mementoes of Australia including Emus Eggs, tail feathers of a Lyre bird and nuggets and minerals mined in Australia – now on show in the village museum.

· The churchyard has a gravestone marking William’s death in 1911 and Jane’s in 1935.
