Walter enlisted with the Berkshire Yeomanry, Regimental Number 106132, on 29th December 1915. In April 1918 the Berkshire Yeomanry merged with the Buckinghamshire Yeomanry to form C Battalion, the Machine Gun Corps with whom his Regimental Number was 165170. In June C Battalion moved via Italy to France and in August 1918 it was renumbered 101st Battalion, the Machine Gun Corps.
Walter was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
Walter survived the War but it is not known when he died.
He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

Walter Henry (known as Harry) was born at Little Amwell, near Hertford Heath, Hertfordshire in the 3rd quarter of 1891, the third son of James and Elizabeth (nee Hagger) Clark. He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell, Hertfordshire and the 1911 census shows him as a farm labourer. His father James was the policeman in Ashwell for many years.
Walter married Gracie Barnes of Slip End Farm on 8th May 1920. It is not known if they had children.
It is not known when Walter died.
Two of Walter’s brothers, Leonard Arthur and Reginald George also fought in the War and both survived.
