Sidney enlisted in March 1915. He was sent to the Western Front, France and Flanders at the beginning of 1916. Sidney’s medical records show him being transferred from Loos on 18 March 1917 in Sick Convoy Train 14 and admitted to 18th General Hospital, Camiers with bronchitis and discharged back to duty on 25 March 1917.  Sidney was badly gassed and recuperating in a Manchester hospital in April 1918 after which he was discharged as no longer fit for military duty.  He survived the War and died in 1927.

He was awarded the British War Medal, the Victory Medal and the Silver War Badge.

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

It is not known where or when Sidney was born, nor is it known when he came to Ashwell, Hertfordshire.

Sidney married Jennie Wilkins of Ashwell in 1913. It is believed they lived in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire. They had no children.

Sidney died in 2nd quarter 1927.

Jennie applied for a War-Widow Pension in July 1927.
