John enlisted at London in June 1916. He was initially a private with the Hertfordshire Regiment, regimental number 7222) but transferred to the Somerset Light Infantry, regimental number 27028. He served in the Western European Theatre of War, France and Flanders and was killed in action on 16th September 1916.
John was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.
He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial France, pier and face 2, on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honourm, the Ashwell War Memorial and the Clare College Cambridge Roll of Honour.

John was the only child of Robert and Alicia (nee Leman) Noyes of London. He was a pupil of the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell and on the 1911 census he is a pupil of Haileybury College in Hertford. He became a student at Clare College, Cambridge in 1912.
