John enlisted on 11th July 1917. He served with the Household Battalion, Regimental Number 3317, on the Western Front, France and Flanders. In the general conversion of cavalry men to infantry in 1918 John joined the Grenadier Guards, Regimental Number 30532. He survived the War.
It is not known when John died.
He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

John was born in Ashwell on 1st November 1891, third son of John and Mary Ann (nee Brindy) Ashwell.
The 1911 census shows him living in Stevenage with his brother. He was working in his brother’s butcher shop in High Street. There was a butcher shop in High Street, Ashwell in the 1940s owned by a John Ashwell, but it is not known if this is the same John.
It is not known if he married or had children, nor when he died.
