Nothing is known of Frederick’s military history except that he enlisted in January 1916 and survived the War.
It is presumed that because Frederick did not leave the Metropolitan Police until 1920 and had been seconded to the War Department at the Arsenal Magazines on Plumstead Marshes (now Thamesmead) in 1897 that he was still stationed there during the War.
He died at the Lister Hospital, Hitchin, Hertfordshire on 9th May 1957.
He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

Frederick Charles was the second son of Charles and Caroline (nee Gray) born at Rushden, (in the parish of Clothall), Hertfordshire on 6th December 1870. He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell.
Frederick joined the Metropolitan Police force on 1st January 1894 at Scotland Yard, London. On 27th August 1897 he was transferred to the 1st Division and was stationed at the Arsenal Magazines on Plumstead Marshes, seconded to the War Department. Frederick retired from the police force on 2nd February 1920 and returned to Hertfordshire where he became a publican. Records show him licensee of the Moon & Stars at Rushden, Hertfordshire in 1951, and at the time of his death in 1957 he was the licensee of the Pig & Whistle at Stotfold, Bedfordshire.
Frederick married Sarah Louisa Lacey at Clothall, Hertfordshire on 26th August 1901. They had three daughters, Elsie Mabel born April 1902, Mary Mathilda born August 1905 and Daisy Hilda born July 1910. Daisy emigrated to Ontario Canada and married there in 1934.
Frederick died at the Lister Hospital, Hitchin, Hertfordshire on 9th May 1957.
