Ernest enlisted on 13th March 1917. He was a gunner with P Battery, Royal Horse Artillery. It appears P Battery was based in Woolwich so Ernest would have spent the War in England. He survived the war and died in Ashwell on 12th April 1961.
He is buried in St Mary’s Churchyard, Ashwell and commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

Ernest was a cashier to Messrs E.K. & H. Fordham Ltd, brewers, and his son Derrick held this position after him.
He died at the Lister Hospital on 17th April 1961.
