Ernest enlisted at Hitchin, Hertfordshire on 2nd May 1916 with the Royal Field Artillery as Gunner, Regimental Number 125229. He spent the first few years of service in England. He was posted with the 56th Battery, 34th Army Brigade, of the Royal Field Artillery to the Western Front, France and Flanders on 6th April 1918.  Ernest survived the War and died in the Hitchin District in March 1976.

Ernest was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

Ernest was the son of Elizabeth Webb, born in Ashwell on 5th December 1889.  He lived with his Aunt and Uncle, John and Anne (nee Webb) Waldock from a very early age at The Lodge, Station Rd, Ashwell, Hertfordshire. He was a scholar at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell.  Before enlisting he was a horsekeeper.

It is not known if Ernest married or had children.

He died in the Hitchin District in March 1976.
