Ernest enlisted with the Navy on 24th July 1908. He was a stoker, Service Number 107398. He served on various ships over the years and was based at Chatham, Kent when War broke out. Ernest was mobilised to the Mediterranean Theatre of War in 1916 and was serving on HMS Cornwallis when on 9th January she was torpedoed and sunk off Malta. He survived the War and was demobbed on 8th March 1919. He died at Ashwell, Hertfordshire on 10th January 1963.
Ernest was awarded the 1914 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour and is buried in St Marys burial ground, Ashwell, Hertfordshire.

Ernest was born on 20th April 1890 at Ashwell, Hertfordshire the third son of John and Caroline (nee Waldock) Picking. He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell. His Navy records state he was a butcher’s assistant before enlisting.
Ernest married Jessie M W Norman but it is not known when nor if they had any children.
Ernest died at Ashwell, Hertfordshire on 10th January 1963 and is buried in St Marys burial ground, Ashwell, Hertfordshire.
