Ernest enlisted in June 1916, Nothing is known of his military history but the 1918 Absent Voters List shows him as being in the 433rd Agricultural Company of the Labour Corps, Regimental Number 506641. This implies that he was wounded in the War as Agricultural Companies were generally made up of men no longer fit for active service.
Ernest survived the War and died in the 2nd quarter 1948.
He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

Ernest was born at Ashwell, Hertfordshire in the 2nd quarter 1878, the second son of James and Charlotte (nee Huffer) Worboys. He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell. Before enlisting Ernest worked as a maltster’s labourer for one of the brewery companies in Ashwell.
Ernest married Emily Rose Reynolds on 24th December 1900 at Ashwell, Hertfordshire. They had six children, all born in Ashwell, Dorothy Matilda born 30 October 1901, Mary Winifred born 23rd April 1903, Ernest James born 16th October 1905, Frank Raymond born 3rd June 1909, Phyllis Charlotte born 26th April 1915 and Cyril Rupert born 5th December 1920.
There are electoral roll entries for 1924-29 showing that Ernest and Rose lived in Dunton, Bedfordshire.
Ernest died in the 2nd quarter 1948 in the Royston District.
