Ernest enlisted on 10th January 1916 with the Bedfordshire Regiment, Regimental Number 25192. He transferred Regiments many times during the War, firstly the North Lancashire Regiment, Regimental Number 23426, then the Manchester Regiment, Regimental Number 44415, the Machine Gun Corps, Regimental Number 76710 and finishing the War with the Royal Engineers, Regimental Number 313432. Ernest saw active service on the Western Front, France and Flanders and survived the War.
Ernest died on 5th May 1967 at Ivinghoe, Buckinghamshire and is buried in St Nicholas Cemetery, Hinxworth, Hertfordshire.
Ernest was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

Ernest was the third son of William John and Rose (nee Elliott) Law, born at Barnet, Hertfordshire in the first quarter 1896. He was a pupil of the Merchant Taylor School in Ashwell.
Ernest married Marjorie Florence Cranfield in the Royston, Hertford district in the 3rd quarter 1918. They had two children, Ernest John, born 1921 and Freda, born 1925.
Ernest died on 5th May 1967 at Ivinghoe, Buckinghamshire and is buried in St Nicholas Church Cemetery, Hinxworth, Hertfordshire with his wife Marjorie.
Ernest’s brother (Eli) George also served in the War and survived.
