Ernest enlisted with the Royal Navy Coast Guard Division in May 1894, Service Number 127697. In 1901 he was a boatman and coastguard stationed at the Barracks in Hartlepool barracks in County Durham.  He served as Coastguard during the War in the Hull, Humberside area.  He survived the War and retired from military duties on 1st May 1919 but was re-engaged by the Coast Guard on 1st September 1919 at the Barton-on-Humber station, Lincolnshire and remained there for the rest of his career.

Ernest was awarded the 1914/15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

Ernest died at Barton-on-Humber, Lincolnshire on 31st October 1954.

He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

Ernest was the 4th son of Thomas and Jane Sarah (nee Smith), born at Ashwell, Hertfordshire on 23rd November 1867.  Ernest was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell.

Ernest married Alice Hodgson at Sculcoates, Hull, Humberside in the 3rd quarter 1898. They had had one daughter, Elsie Brenda, born on 5th May 1899 and christened at Ashwell, Hertfordshire.

Ernest died at Barton-on-Humber, Lincolnshire on 31st October 1954.
