Edward enlisted at Lincoln, Lincolnshire on 4th April 1916 with the West Yorkshire Regiment, Regimental Number 5051. He was almost immediately sent to the Western Front, to Etaples. He was transferred to various battalions until on 9th September 1916 he was transferred to 1/8th Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment and given the new Regimental Number 307706. On 20th October 1917 he was appointed Lance Corporal and immediately promoted to Corporal. On 22nd July 1917 he was wounded in action by a gas shell explosion and over the next few days suffered more gas shell explosions. He was sent to England to recover but on 11th August 1917 returned to Etaples to re-join his regiment. During the battle on 29th January 1918 Edward performed an act of great bravery for which he was awarded the Military Medal. On 25th April 1918 he was reported missing in action. He did however survive the War and returned to Holbeach, Lincolnshire where he died in the 4th quarter 1965.
Edward was awarded the British War Medal, the Victory Medal and the Military Medal.
He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

Edward was born at Ashwell, Hertfordshire at the end of December 1881 to Emma Webb, a single woman. The 1991 census shows Edward living with his uncle and aunt Waldock in Ashwell. He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell. The 1901 census shows Edward a furniture porter living in Islington, London. By 1911 he had moved to St Marks Holbeach, Lincoln where he was a farm labourer. His military records show his address on demobilisation in 1919 as Dawsmere, Lincolnshire.
It is not known if Edward married or had children.
He died at Holbeach, Lincolnshire in the 4th quarter 1965.
