Arthur served as a private in the Household Cavalry and Cavalry of the Line, 1/1st Bedfordshire Yeomanry with regimental number 31102.  He fought in the Western European Theatre of War, France and Flanders where he was injured by a German bomb. He died a few days later on 17 June 1918 at the No.1 General South African Hospital in France.

He was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.

He is buried in the Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension, France, grave IV.B.17 and commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Roll of Honour, The Ashwell Village War Memorial, and the Letchworth War Memorial (possibly).

Arthur was one of seven sons of Leopold, (baker) and Mary Ann (nee Bonfield) Day of High Street Ashwell who served in the armed forces in WWI. He was born and lived in Ashwell.

Arthur was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School, Ashwell.  Before joining the armed forces Arthur was a booking clerk at the Letchworth Railway Station.

Arthur’s brothers Harry, Cyril, Jack and Edward all served in the War and survived.
