It appears Frederick enlisted in 1914 and the 2nd Battalion 21st Brigade 7th Division was mobilised on 7th October 1914 and landed at Zeebrugge and engaged in various actions on the Western front.

Frederick served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 4th Battalion of the Bedfordshire Regiment, attached to the 2nd Battalion 21st Brigade 7th Division. He fought in the Western European Theatre of War, France.  Frederick was killed in action in France on 6th November 1915.

It is likely that Frederick would have been awarded the 1914/15 Star, the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.

He is commemorated on the Guards Cemetery, Windy Corner, Cuinchy, France, St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour and the Ashwell War Memorial.

Frederick’s father Thomas was born in Bexley, Kent but Frederick, his mother Mary Ann and his two brothers Thomas and Alexander Emslie were born in Scotland. His father was a jute or linen merchant in London and his brother Alexander Emslie, who was also in the cloth trade but whose business became bankrupt on 22 July 1907, was Frederick’s sole legatee .

Frederick attended the Merchant Taylors School.

Commentary:

Frederick’s war records show his parents as Thomas and Mary Anne Anns, of “Brookville,” Hale Lane, Edgware, Middlesex.  Frederick’s probate record states he was of Ridlands,(sic – Redlands) Ashwell, Baldock.
