The Australian Cow

The Australian Cow was a beer house built in 1852,the year in which many emigrated to the Australian gold fields. Situated on the corner of the High Street and Kingsland Way, it was owned by Fordham's brewery, and closed in 1915.

It is said that the pub was given its name when the landlord and lady walked a cow back from Tilbury to Ashwell. The cow had had a free passage from Australia because it was in milk for the journey.
