Fred enlisted with the Royal Engineers, Regimental Number 279816, at Bedford on the 15th May 1917. He embarked to the Western Front, France and Flanders on 1st June 1917 with Royal Engineers, 331st Road Construction Company, Regimental Number WR/24127. He was demobbed on 26th February 1919.
Fred survived the War and died on 4th January 1968.
Fred was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

Fred was the elder son of George Edward and Elizabeth (nee Jeeves), born at Ashwell, Hertfordshire in the 1st quarter 1885. He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell. The 1911 census shows him as a bricklayer’s labourer and his military records show him as a ‘roadman’.
Fred married Adelaide Worboys in St Mary’s Church, Ashwell, Hertfordshire on 6th April 1912. They had two sons, Percy George born on 17th January 1913, and William James born on 27th October 1915.
Fred died on 4th January 1968 at Henlow.
His brother Percy Edward also served in the War and survived.
