Clifford John enlisted in August 1914 with the Bedfordshire Regiment, Regimental Number 14136, He later transferred to the Machine Gun Corps, Regimental Number 9343. He saw active service with the 17th Battalion, MGC, on the Western Front, France and Flanders. He was mentioned in dispatches during this time. Clifford survived the War and was discharged on 21st May 1919.
He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal and the Oak Leaf pin for being mentioned in Dispatches.
Clifford died on 6th June 1947.
He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour,

Clifford John was the first child of Martha Louisa Harradine (father not known), born in Ashwell, Hertfordshire in the 4th quarter of 1891. He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell.
Clifford became a gardener at an early age. The 1911 census shows him a gardener living in Brent Pelham, Buntingford, Hertfordshire. By 1947 he and become the Superintendent of the Clissold (public) Park in Stoke Newington, Hackney, London and would have had a staff of about 15 people under him. He lived with his family in the Superintendent’s Lodge in the Park.
Clifford married Lucy Clipsam in Horncastle, Lincolnshire in the first quarter of 1920. They had four children, Constance Beryl born in Brackley, Northamptonshire in the 2nd quarter of 1921, Winifred Joyce born in Woolwich, London in the 1st quarter of 1924, Alexander J born in the 3rd quarter of 1929 and Sheila M born in the 2nd quarter of 1935.
Clifford died on 6th July 1947 at Stoke Newington, London.
