Chester enlisted on 10th March 1915 with the Royal Marine Light Infantry, Chatham Division, Service Number 19798. He served in the Western European Theatre of War, France and Flanders but was invalided out in February 1917 suffering from trench feet.
He was awarded the Victory Medal, the British War Medal and the 1914/15 Star.
Chester died on 16th October 1978.
He is commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour.

Chester was the eldest son of Thomas and Laura (nee Dix) Capon, born on 1st January 1897 at Henlow, Bedfordshire. He was a pupil at the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell. The 1911 census shows him as a bottler at a brewery in Ashwell.
He married May Lillian Davey in the first quarter of 1920. It is possible that they had one son, John R, born at the end of 1920.
Chester died on 16th October 1978 at Welham Green, Hertfordshire.
