John enlisted at Hitchin on 17th June 1916. He served with the South Wales Borderers 10th Battalion, Regimental number 40406 in the Western European Theatre of War, France and Belgium. He died of wounds on 19th August 1917.
John was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal.
He is buried in Bard Cottage Cemetery, Ypres, Arrondissment Ieper, West Flanders, Belgium, and commemorated on the St Mary’s Church Ashwell Roll of Honour and the Ashwell War Memorial.

John was born in Ashwell, the sixth son of John and Martha (nee Scoot) Sheldrick. He was a pupil of the Merchant Taylors School in Ashwell and before enlisting in the army he was a farm labourer.
John’s brother Bertie died of wounds on 19th March 1915 at Neuve Chapelle, France.
